Introduction
The Master of Applied Art and Design will enable students and professionals to reach a high level of expertise and qualification in contemporary design and art practice. The course aims to develop creative and professional skills through studies in cross and interdisciplinary design and art practice. It is suited to applicants with knowledge and expertise from other disciplines as well as those with formal qualifications in art and design. Students will learn through discussion, reflection and the production of original and innovative solutions to studio based or industrially related projects. The study program encourages independent research, originality, creative leadership and awareness of the needs of contemporary society.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
This course is available to applicants who have a Bachelor degree, or equivalent, or a Graduate Certificate, from a recognised tertiary institution. All applicants are required to attend an interview and may be required to submit a comprehensive folio of recent work.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
Duration and Availability
This fee-paying course is three semesters full-time or equivalent part-time study.
Intermediate Awards 1
A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate award(s) approved for this course are:

Course Organisation
Through a combination of coursework, project based units and professional placements students will learn the skills and depth of knowledge required to produce contemporary design and art solutions. The program is flexible and can be tailored to suit individual interests and professional development. Students may choose to focus their studies in specialisations of 3D design, art and design studies, creative advertising and graphic design, fine art, fashion design, photography and illustration design, textiles, digital design.
Professional Recognition
Graduates are recognised by professional associations such as the National Association for the Arts (NAVA) and Design Institute of Australia. Graduates are also eligible for membership in the Australia Graphic Design Association, Perth Art Directors Club, The Design Management Institute, and Design Institute of Australia, Perth Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA), Arts Source: The Artists Foundation of Western Australia, FORM (originally CraftWest).

Graduates of design and art generally find employment within all avenues of art and/or design administrator, advertising professional, animator, art project manager, art consultant, art writer, arts administrator, computer game programmer, computer games developer, curator, community arts professional, design consultant, fashion professional, internet professional, lighting designer, media industry specialist, multimedia designer, public arts professional, project developer, project manager, producer, visual artist, visual arts or design and technology teacher, web designer.
