Syllabus: | The mechanical, thermal and chemical structure of lithospheric plates, and the driving mechanism for their relative movement. Evolution and dynamics of the Earth's core and mantle. Rifting, stretching and loading of continental crust, continental margins, ocean tectonics, mid ocean ridges, mantle plumes and continental flood basalts. Subduction zone and arc mechanics, megmatism, metamorphism and sedimentary basins. Collisional orogens, granites, channel flow and exhumation. Cratons, mobile belts and tectonic processes in Precambrian and Phanerozoic orogens. Continental growth through time and the supercontinent cycle. |
