Course Overview
Graduate Certificates prepare students to develop advanced knowledge and skills for professional or highly skilled work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 8 qualifications.
This course is designed for students seeking an introduction to contemporary design practice and research, providing a firm grounding in the fundamentals of design-led innovation and the application of design practice to social, economic and cultural life. The course is designed as an entry-point to further postgraduate study in the Master of Design or to further practice as a designer, leader or design strategist.

Course Entry and Completion Details
Applicants for a Graduate Certificate are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://study.curtin.edu.au/. Applicants generally require a Bachelor Degree or equivalent credit gained for recognised learning. All Curtin courses have compulsory and other core capabilities that are essential for demonstrating the achievement of course learning outcomes and graduation. Students who are unable to meet or demonstrate those requirements, now or in later stages during their studies, may seek reasonable adjustments by the University wherever possible to facilitate alternative ways of achieving those requirements. If reasonable adjustments cannot be accommodated, Curtin will discuss study options to find an alternative course of study or an exit degree. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.
Applicants are required to have either: work experience in Design or cognate areas, or a Bachelor degree in Design or cognate areas to enter this course. Applicants with work experience or a Bachelor degree in non-cognate areas, or other pathways, should contact the Course Coordinator.
Credit for Recognised Learning
Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Course Learning Outcomes
A graduate of this course can:
1. develop a foundational knowledge of their field of design practice articulated through the creation of new artefacts, services, products or processes
2. apply specialised knowledge, theories, frameworks and practices relevant to design leadership to inform design-led innovation
3. demonstrate a critical reflection on design theory, practice and history in a social and cultural context
4. apply knowledge of design to the framing and interrogation of problems to develop appropriate design solutions
5. professionally communicate concepts, proposals, ideas, and final designs to a target audience
6. understand the complexity and global context of contemporary design practice
7. apply emerging technologies effectively to design practice or process to communicate the value of design
8. contextualise design practice and process for real-life application in industry and practice
9. understand and apply the value of design to communities, enterprises and public
