This course is designed to prepare registered nurses for a leadership role in domiciliary nursing. Key elements of the curriculum are critical thinking, professional accountability, advanced assessment skills, evidenced based practice, leadership and competence to practice at an advanced level. To provide for the development of competency in clinical decision making and clinical judgement the curriculum includes a preceptored practicum. Additional units will prepare the nurse for expanded domiciliary practice, professional leadership and work in research foundations.
Prospective students must be a nurse registered in Division One, Western Australia with a Bachelor of Science (Nursing) or its equivalent. Alternate mode of entry will be offered to nurses registered in Division One with the Nurses Board but without an undergraduate degree. Non-degree applicants must meet the School of Nursing and Midwifery's criteria for alternate entry. International applicants must be registered in Division One with the Nurses Board of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Science Degree or its equivalent and meet the English competency as per the University's entrance requirements.
Prospective students are advised that a Police Clearance may be required for students in specific courses offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Students may also be required to have current competency in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
This fee-paying course is two semesters full-time duration or equivalent part-time.
A student who has completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval from the Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate awards approved for this course appear below.
Graduate Certificate in Domicialiary Nursing.
Students will complete the clinical practice unit of this course in an approved domiciliary setting under the preceptorship of an experienced practice domiciliary nurse.
Graduates will be able to seek employment with domiciliary nursing agencies or with home visiting programs coordinated by hospitals, rehabilitation units or medical practices in metropolitan and rural settings.
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other essential study materials.
