Syllabus: | Sociology of the arts, the arts in Australia, artistic activity and social structure, 'Artsworlds' and collective activity, artistic conventions, sociology of art perception, artistic and general ideologies, art schools and art debates in Australia, connections between the material and social conditions of art production and the work of art, plus major research paper. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Understood the major approaches to the sociological study of the arts and culture. Viewed art as a social product. Understood the role of arts in contemporary economy and society, and of the development of arts and culture as industries. Analysed the changing relationship between the arts and the state. Related the sociological analysis of the arts to wider concerns in sociological theory and analysis. Demonstrated that they have reached the intellectual level required of third year sociology students by completing a major research essay on an approved topic. |
