Syllabus:

Graphics as a communication medium. Theories of graphics communication. Principles of colour and colour description systems. Colour conventions in cartography. Cognitive mapping. Space perception. Space representation in graphics. Gestalt theories. Figure and ground relationships. General principles of design, viz layout, balance, aesthetics and rules.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On completion of this unit students will have - Understood the rules, representations, conventions and associations in map design, become competent with the Freehand 8 software package and achieved a certain level of functionality with computer assisted cartography.
