Syllabus:

Theories of intellectual and social growth in young children. Approaches to planning which enhance intellectual and social growth, including theories of play, play as child's avenue for learning, the role of play in developing language, thinking and social values and in facilitating physical development.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have - Examined a number of images (or theories) about children and childhood. Considered the social and cultural contexts in which these are developed. Explored the implications of such images for the way in which teachers and caregivers work. Used the understandings so developed to examine their own teaching behaviour. Planned alternative strategies.
