Syllabus: | General chemistry involving molecular and ionic equilibria, kinetics, principles of chromatography, reactions and properties of organic compounds containing common functional groups. Experiments involving purification and separation techniques, chemical and ionic equilibria, pH and buffers, and reactions of functional groups. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students should be able to - Efficiently and accurately perform a range of laboratory procedures. Appreciate the need for safe working practices in the laboratory; perform a range of mathematical calculations relatedto the manipulation and interpretation of data. Identify and name simple organic compounds using IUPAC rules. Identify the basic functional groups in organic compounds and predict the common reactions these will undergo. Demonstrate a basic understandingof the first law of thermodynamics and be able to solve simple problems relating to the application of this law. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the chemical kinetics and the factors affect reaction rates. Demonstrate a basic understanding of colligative properties and be able to solve simple problems relating to the effect of these on solution properties. Describe and apply the concepts of molecular and ionic equilibria, including solubility, acids and bases and buffers. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the principals and practice in chromatography. |
