Syllabus: | Bonding theory - valence bond, molecular orbital treatment of diatomic and polyatomic molecules. P block chemistry - group trends allotropy and bonding in the p block. Solid state chemistry - packing of ions in solids, typical AX, AX2 and selected crystal structures. Lattice defects, non-stoichiometric compounds, thermodynamics, substitutional, interstitial, subtractional and non-stoichiometric phases. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit the student will be able to describe unit cells, atoms per unit cell, and packing of ions in solids, coordination number related to radius ratio for typical AX and AX2 structures, lattice defects that occur in ionic crystals, non-stoichiometric compounds, elements of symmetry that exist in AX2 to AX6 molecules and simple organic molecules and fundamental properties of the elements such as radii and electronegativities in relation to hard-soft acid-base theory. They will have gained familiarity with the relative stability and solubility trends of simple salts, silicate structures, the industrial applications of some of s- and p-block compounds such as glasses, fertilisers and detergents and the chemistry of alumina production. |
