Syllabus: | Examination of the relationship between planning and the market economy with a particular focus on land use. Economic factors behind housing, retailing, wholesaling, manufacturing, offices and urban transport are reviewed. The rationale for public intervention in the land market is examined. A critique of the 'economic way of thinking'. |

Unit Outcomes: | Upon successful completion of this unit students will have developed an understanding of - planning and the market, economic rationales for planning and equity, urban macro-economics and municipal expenditure and revenue, the economics of housing (including tenures), retailing and wholesaling, developers, investors, retailers, workers, customers and planning authorities, the manufacturing of offices and community services, urban transport economics, environment and economics, and locational requirements of urban activities. |
