Area:

Department of Applied Chemistry

Credits:

25.0

Contact Hours:

6.0

Lecture:

1 x 1 Hours Weekly

Tutorial:

1 x 2 Hours Weekly

Laboratory:

1 x 3 Hours Weekly

Syllabus:

Components of matter. Chemical equations and stoichiometry. Solutions, concentration of solutions and volumetric analysis. Oxidation-reduction reactions. Properties of gases. Alkanes, cycloalkanes. Alkenes. Polymers, alkynes. Benzene and derivatives.

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to efficiently and accurately perform a range of laboratory procedures, perform a range of mathematical calculations related to the manipulation and interpretation of data, write chemical formulas and equations and name compounds, solve problems relating to stoichiometry, solution concentrations and volumetric analysis, determine oxidation states and balance redox equations, demonstrate an understanding of the language and terminology used in organic chemistry and of the laws governing the behaviour of gases and identify the basic classes of hydrocarbons and be able to predict the common reactions these will undergo. Finally, they will learn to appreciate the need for safe working practices in the laboratory
