Syllabus:

Sociology of dentistry - sociological influences on health, disease and dental care. Periodontal disease - aetiology, tissue changes. Caries - epidemiology, aetiology, pathology, risk assessment. Dental disease prevention - dental health education introduction, plaque and plaque control, sealants, fluorides, nutrition and oral health. Communication - models, assignment preparation, referencing.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have - Produced a referenced research assignment of acceptable quality. Demonstrated an understanding of sociological principles as applied to oral health. Demonstrated an understanding of some of the theoretical basis of prevention, risk assessment, health education and health promotion. Identified people at risk of the main dental diseases and suggested scientifically based preventive measures.
