Syllabus:

Molecular and ionic equilibria. Oxidation and reduction reactions. Alkyl halides. Alcohols, phenols and ethers. Aldehydes and etones. Carboxylic acids and derivatives. Amines.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to efficiently and accurately perform a range of laboratory procedures, they will appreciate the need for safe working practices in the laboratory and perform a range of mathematical calculations related to the manipulation and interpretation of data. They will demonstrate the knowledge to be able to identify the basic functional groups in organic compounds and predict the common reactions these will undergo, concepts of molecular and ionic equilibria, including solubility, acids and bases and buffers and the chemistry of electrochemical cells.
