Syllabus: | This unit is designed for students who have passed TEE Chemistry. General chemistry involving molecular and ionic equilibria, EMF, atomic structure and trends, covalent bonding, shapes of molecules and hybridisation, intermolecular and ionic bonding, S,P, and D block chemistry, coordination chemistry. Experiments involving quantitative analysis, introductory titrimetric analysis, measurement of heats and rates of reactions and chemical and ionic equilibria, pH and buffers. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students have - Efficiently and accurately performed a range of lab procedures. Appreciated the need for safe practices in the lab. Performed a range of mathematical calculations related to the use and interpretationof data. Demonstrated an understanding of atomic structure. Predicted properties of elements based on key periodic trends. Demonstrated an understanding of covalent bonding, applied basic theory to determine the shape of molecules. Demonstrated a basic understanding of the concept of hybridisation. Described and applied the concepts of molecular and ionic equilibria, including solubility, acids and bases and buffers. Demonstrated a basic understanding of the chemistry of electrochemical cells. Describedthe types of intermolecular forces present in solids, liquids and gases. Demonstrated a basic understanding of ionic bonding and be able to apply the Born-Harber cycle. Demonstrated a basic understanding of S- and P-block chemistry in relation to the classification of metals and non-metals, oxidation states and the properties of oxides, hydrides and halides. Demonstrated a basic understanding of the chemistry of the transition metals, particularly their coordination chemistry. |
