Syllabus: | Inorganic chemistry - intermolecular forces, solubility, transition elements and their coordination compounds. Organic chemistry - functional groups, Alcohols, phenols and ethers, aldehydes and ketones, polyhydric alcohols and carbohydrates, carboxylic acids and derivatives, lipids - oils, fats and waxes, Amines, amino acids and proteins. Physical chemistry - molecular and ionic equilibria, oxidation and reduction reactions. |
|
Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of the unit the student will be able to efficiently and accurately perform a range of laboratory procedures, appreciate the need for safe working practices in the laboratory, perform a range of mathematical calculations related to the manipulation and interpretation of data, identify the basic functional groups in organic compounds and be able to predict the common reactions these will undergo, describe and apply the concepts of molecular and ionic equilibria, including solubility, acids, bases and buffers, demonstrate a basic understanding of the chemistry of electrochemical cells, describe the types of intermolecular forces present in solids, liquids and gases and demonstrate a basic understanding of the chemistry of the transition metals, particularly their coordination chemistry. |
