Syllabus:

Physiological principles of the afferent systems in particular those subserving pain. Concepts of sensation and perception and the structures involved in the pain experience. Joint receptors, the Gate Control theory and the descending pain control systems. Effect of pain on normal movement patterns, physical methods of pain relief.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of the unit students will have described accurately the anatomical structures involved in the pain experience. Described the physiological interactions involved in the production of pain and differentiated between pain of centraland peripheral origin. Demonstrated familiarity with the current literature relevant to the pain of musculoskeletal origin.
