Syllabus:

An introduction to disability and rehabilitation including an overview of philosophical, historical and legislative developments. The psychology of rehabilitation practice and theoretical underpinnings of selected service delivery systems are examined. Issues of ethnicity, gender, age and personal values about work and disability are explored. Ethical professional practice.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to - State a clear and consistent personal philosophy regarding rehabilitation practice. Demonstrate an understanding of the philosophical foundations of rehabilitation. Identify historical andlegislative developments contributing to the development of rehabilitation in Australia. Understand service delivery systems operating in Australia. Explain the role of the rehabilitation counsellor and other professionals operating in a rehabilitation area. Demonstrate an understanding of the rehabilitation process and case management skills. Demonstrate an understanding of issues involved in vocational assessment, planning and evaluation. Understand the need for ethical guidelines and to be familiar with and utilise the APS Code of Ethics. The student will be able to respond ethically and professionally to common ethical problems without reference to the Code.

Students will need to obtain a copy of the Australian Psychological Society Code of Ethics for the ethics component of the unit.
