Syllabus:

Advanced level of knowledge of the anatomical and pathological processes related to cervical, thoracic and lumbar disorders. Age related changes to the vertebral column. Anatomy, aetiology, pathology, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and pathomechanics of specific disorders and syndromes related to peripheral and spinal regions including current surgical evaluation and procedures. Review of the anatomical literature, select a clinical question then complete an anatomical dissection focusing on one part of the human body. Plain film radiography evaluation. Rationale for the use of clinical diagnostic tests in the evaluation of spinal joint and peripheral pathologies,
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit the student will have - Demonstrated an advanced level of knowledge of the pathological processes of disease and injury related to cervical, thoracic and lumbar disorders. Described the age related and dysfunctional changes that occur in the vertebral column. Described the anatomy, aetiology, pathology, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and pathomechanics of specific disorders and syndromes related to the spinal and peripheral regions including current surgical evaluation and procedures. Reviewed the anatomical literature and completed a dissection related to a specific anatomical region and pathology in the human body. Demonstrated the ability to prescribe and interpret plain film spinal and peripheral radiographs. Described the rationale for the use of clinical diagnostic tests and medical imaging in the evaluation of spinal and peripheral joint pathologies.
