Syllabus:

Designed to convey an understanding of the basic elements, concepts and language used in screen production. Provides exposure to such concepts as narrative, form and content, as well as to some of the practical aspects of basic screen production such as scriptwriting, sound recording, filming, editing and so on. Examines the function of linear narrative structure and its pivotal role in the manipulation of time and space in the process of developing and constructing screen texts. Nurtures creative talents though the production of screen texts. Builds on the concepts and principles introduced in Introduction to Visual Culture 061 and Introduction to Media and Communication Studies 063.

Unit Outcomes:

On completion of this unit, students will be able to - Have an understanding of how stories are conceived, constructed and developed for the screen. Become familiar with the practicalities of basic screen production. Comprehend the various processes and stages (pre-production, production and post-production) inherent to screen production. Grasp the rudiments of audio-visual language for screen production purposes. Have the ability to use personal creativity and apply basic technical skills in creating a personal audio-visual screen text by using a limited range of elements and resources. Develop the capability of finding creative solutions and alternatives to practical problems associated with screen production. Acquire interpersonal communication skills, by the intermediary of collaborating with and supporting others as part of a screen production team. Gain time management skills and the ability to plan schedules and meet deadlines. Develop effective and independent learning skills.
