Syllabus: | The basis of engineering design. Early warship design. Figures of merit in Warship Design. Creating the Design Package. Sir Edward Reed and scientific ship design. The 1871 Committee of Designs. The admiralty design process. Designing warships 1870-1888.Pre-dreadnought warship design. HMS Dreadnought. Modern systems engineering. |
|
Unit Outcomes: | On completion of this unit students will know the history of the evolution of warship design as an example of systems engineering; understand from the context of history why and how the engineering design method evolved, and continues to evolve as modernsystems engineering theory; be able to undertake high and medium level design of warships as practiced around 1870 and as a result of that appreciate the need for design tools and standards; develop an appreciation of the role of compromise in engineering design and why there is a difference between requirements and design specifications; appreciate the need for iteration in the design process and the boundaries between high, medium and low level design; appreciate the impact of implementation techniqueson the design process; develop skills in and appreciate the need for team work in systems engineering. |
