Syllabus: | Designed for students with TEE Physics or those who have taken Engineering Physics 100 at Curtin. Newton's Laws - Forces, equilibrium, moments and resultants, couples and distributed forces - free bodies and free-body diagrams, trusses - Analysis of beams - Stress and strain, thermal effects, failure - Compatibility, superposition - Displacement, velocity and acceleration, linear and rotational motion. Plane kinematics and kinetics, momentum - Work, power, P.E. and K.E. - Hydrostatics, Fluid flow, pressure, flow rate, momentum flux, fluid forces, Bernoulli equation. |

Unit Outcomes: | On completion of this unit students will have developed skills in - The application of logic, analysis and modelling. Competence in scientific reasoning and its application to engineering mechanics. Discipline in the use of consistent units and dimensional awareness. Understanding of the concept of 'fit for purpose' in engineering and the means by which this precept is assessed. |
