Syllabus: | Introduction, cultivation, batch and continuous reactors, solid-state fermentations; Scale-up of bioreactors; instrumentation and control; sterilization of process fluids; Recovering and purifying products, integration of reaction and separation; Structure and biochemistry of animal cells; products of animal cell cultures; Plant cells in culture, bioreactors for: suspension cultures; and organized tissues; Influence of product on process design, choosing host-vector systems, genetic instability. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit, students will have obtained the basic knowledge in bioprocessing including the selection, scale-up, operation and control of bioreactors, recovery and purification of products using bioprocessing methods, and the application of bioprocessing to other non-conventional biological systems. |
