Syllabus:

An introduction to a range of professional practice issues in counselling. Ethics of counselling are a focus as are professional identity issues, particularly for counsellors for whom counselling is not a sole professional role. Current professional, regulatory, employment and work-role trends in Australia are also addressed.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have - Identified and demonstrated an understanding of core dimensions of ethical counselling practice. Differentiated between core principle and virtue ethical dilemmas in counselling. Applied the use of an ethical decision making process to ethical dilemmas in counselling, and recommend appropriate courses of action. Drafted a professional counselling supervision contract in accordance with recommended practice. Identified the ethical and practitionerdemands of unique counselling situations, (for example., rural/remote areas and cultural, disability, palliative care and pastoral care situations). Demonstrated an understanding of the current professional, industrial and legal parameters of counsellingin Australia. Identified personal goals in relation to self-care as a counselling provider. Articulated an understanding of the counsellor's professional role and identity.
