Syllabus:

Introduction to hand skills and problem solving as they relate to the practice of Product Design.Tuition is workshop orientated using project based design problems. Emphasis is placed on hand skills and use of technology. This unit is undertaken over a six week period.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On the successful completion of this unit, students will have - Developed an open-minded and critical thinking approach to the appropriate use of these skills in the design process. An understanding of technical issues that apply to designing in three-dimensions. Developed an open-minded and critical thinking approach to design ideation and development. Applied problem-solving skills to design. Created a predisposition to innovative in preference to conventional assumptions and thinking. Fostered independent learning skills. Begun to communicate design solutions through verbal, two and three-dimensional methods. Demonstrated good finishing and detailing skills. Further understanding of suitable materials for model making, mock-ups and prototyping. Further understanding of suitable glues and adhesives. Further understanding of suitable equipment to assist the model making process. Knowledge for constructing models using rapid prototyping techniques.
