Syllabus: | Alcohol and drug screening and assessment, theories of addiction, models of drug use, management, consultation and referral of clients with alcohol and other drug use problems. State Acts of parliament and regulations pertinent to personal use and caring for clients with alcohol and other drug problems. Intoxication, withdrawal and non-fatal overdose. Counselling addicted clients. Substance use and mental health disorders and personal safety. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will have - Accurately conducted a therapeutic assessment of alcohol and other drug use in clients. Explored the conceptual issues related to legal and ethical aspects of alcohol and substance use. Conducted first line management of clients with alcohol and drug related problems, including medical, surgical and psychiatric related conditions, intoxication and withdrawal and make appropriate referral or evacuation arrangements. Implemented interventions, including counselling, for the ongoing management of clients with alcohol and other drug use problems. Demonstrated management of issues in relation to personal safety and health in a health care setting providing services for clients with alcohol and otherdrug related problems. |
