Syllabus:

Nurse practitioner scope of practice, role, remote area context, cultural perspectives. Pharmacokentics, standing orders, possession, use, supply or ordering of medications from an approved formulary determined by Chief Medical Officer for use at designated remote area nusing posts. Regulations, legislation, ethical principles, accountability and responsibility related to clients, medications, polypharmacy and prescribing.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have - Identified consequences of legislation governing the practice of remote area nurses and nurse practitioners in relation to pharmacology. Demonstrated competence in the management of clients, across the lifespan, in relation to the appropriate dose, actions, interactions and side effects of medications from an approved formulary determined by the Chief Medical Officer for use at designated remote area nursing posts. Demonstrated competence in thepossession, use, supply or ordering of medications, from an approved formulary determined by the Chief Medical Officer for use at designated remote area nursing posts, within the context of practice and client's cultural perspectives. Assessed clients and have identified factors that may influence the clinician's choice of drug therapy and the therapeutic effectiveness. Analysed the concepts of accountability, responsibility and ethics in relation to prescribing in remote area practice.
