Syllabus:

Introduction to renewable energy. Photo-voltaic energy conversion. Photo-voltaic cells, modules and arrays. Principles of wind energy conversion. Modelling and simulation of renewable energy generators. Supply of electricity in remote areas. Energy storage. Standalone PV systems (SHS). Hybrid energy systems. Sizing of renewable energy systems. Economics of renewable energy systems.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have gained knowledge on the fundamental principles and applications of renewable energy systems with a focus on solar and wind and skills to make informed decisions on the suitability of renewable energy systems to meet the demand for electricity and to acquire the skills to successfully implement renewable energy projects. More specifically they will be able to appreciate the importance of renewable energy in future energy scenarios, describe the fundamental principles of PV and wind energy conversion, select the optimum system configuration for a given application and apply the best practice design principles to the sizing and operation of renewable energy systems. They will learn to consider both technical and social issues in the project planning process and suggest appropriate systems, perform economic feasibility studies of renewable energy systems based on a comparison of supply options and make an informed assessment of potential markets forrenewable energy technologies.
