Syllabus:

Examination of the research in the field of reading development and disorders with a particular focus on children with speech and language impairment. Application to professional practice.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have - Developed an understanding of the key aspects of language that underlie the development of language skills. Developed an understanding of how most children learn to read. Developed and refined a framework of phonological awareness. Studied models of language and reading comprehension. Been introduced to psycholinguistic speech processing models and their application to speech and literacy development. Critically evaluated methods of assessing reading and reading-related skills. Developed skills and strategies in working with children with speech and language impairment and reading difficulties. Related the theoretical literature to professional practice.
