Syllabus: | Introduction to psychological processes and the research methods used to investigate them. Study three topics in - perception, learning, memory, cognition, intelligence and behavioural genetics and motivation. Introduction to descriptive and basic inferential statistics within the context of experimental, differential, and relational design and analysis. Statistical procedures discussed include - measures of central tendency and variability, estimators, the t-test, ANOVA, correlation and regression, the chi-square test. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will be able to - Distinguish between descriptive and inferential statistics. Present data in the most appropriate descriptive format. Demonstrate a working knowledge of basic null hypothesis significance testing procedures, including being able to select the most appropriate statistical test for a variety of data sets. Have good practical experience in using SPSS for the purpose of data entry, graphing, descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. Present the results of statistical analysis in an APA standard results section. |
