Syllabus:

Soil - water - plant relationships, water quality and treatment. Hydraulic theory, design criteria, pumps and pumping systems, filtration, fertigation injectors, controller valves and distribution systems. Installation procedures, irrigation scheduling, root deficit irrigation, operation and maintenance and soil moisture monitoring systems. Water resource development and maintenance.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Explained the principles of irrigation science and technology in relation to climatic parameters found in Western Australia. Described the background to the practice of irrigation science and technology to horticulture and viticulture. Justified the selectionof a given sprinkler system for a particular horticulture or viticulture situation. Assessed the use of regulated deficit irrigation and partial rootzone dry applications to viticulture and fruit production. Planned an irrigation system including water source, distribution and application method for a given purpose. Applied irrigation practice to horticulture or viticulture including monitoring of a system. Explained irrigation management in context of given enterprise in a given edaphic and environmental situation. Designed an irrigation management strategy for a given situation.
