Syllabus:

Water pollution - natural water systems, recreational waters and potable water supply monitoring and analysis for water quality. Integrated catchment management. Swimming pools - water quality management. Standard codes of practice and legislation. Air Pollution - environmental systems, natural and renewable cycles. History of air pollution and case studies on the associated health effects. Air pollution meteorology, types of air pollutants, sources and effects on human health, vegetation, animals and materials, together with economic effects. Sampling and analysis for air pollutants. Introduction to pollution control methods. Current legislation, government policies, standards and codes of practice. Project preparation and design.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to - Demonstrate a knowledge of the sources of water pollution and water quality assessment. Demonstrate a knowledge of uses and limitations of a range of sampling equipment, field and laboratory instrumentation in the measurement and assessment of environmental water pollution. Understand the application and relevance of the current legislation, codes and standards for physical, chemical and biological pollutants in water. Demonstrate a knowledge of the public health aspects of swimming pool management. Demonstrate a knowledge of atmospheric pollutants, their effects on health and the environment. Demonstrate a knowledge of sampling and analytical techniques and control measures used for environmental pollutants. Demonstrate skills in the use of instrumentation use in air pollution monitoring. Demonstrate a knowledge of the fundamentals of air pollution meteorology. Demonstrate an ability to investigate an area of environmental health and prepare a research project proposal.
