Syllabus:

Examination of the ethical, cultural, economic and cross-cultural issues associated with Indigenous Australian heritage and cultural tourism. Site management and interpretation are examined from Indigenous and legislative perspectives, including issues such as custodianship, conservation resource rights and access, intellectual property rights, cultural protocol and native title. Constraints and enablers to Indigenous participation in enterprise are examined and processes for building appropriate partnerships for planning and implementation explored. Case studies are used to illustrate the social and economic impact and potential of cultural tourism on Indigenous Australian people.

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have- Become familiar with guidelines and understandings of best practice when working in cross-cultural contexts. An understanding of the social, economic and cultural, issues associated with the development of indigenous tourism. Become familiar with the processes and protocols required to encourage and enable appropriate partnerships with Indigenous stakeholders.
