Syllabus:

Examination of ecotourism as a strategy for sustainable social and economic development in the Asia-Pacific region. Introduction to definitions and meanings of sustainable tourism development and examination of the recent growth of the industry related to changing lifestyle values and structural changes occurring in the economy. Then, using case studies from Australia, South-East Asia and the western Pacific, an introduction to recent ideas on participatory and sustainable forms of development.

Unit Outcomes:

To gain an understanding of the principles of social, economic and environmental sustainability as they relate to ecotourism. Relationships between economic development, economic restructuring and the growth of the service economy as they relate to tourism activities and opportunities. Participatory approaches to ecotourism development. Growth and development of ecotourism in the Asia pacific region. Potential role of ecotourism as a strategy for local and regional development in the Asia Pacific region.
