Syllabus:

Strategic management in the context of a health care organisation's long term performance, efficiency and effectiveness. Development of a Field Study Report with recommendations based upon analysis of observations, mission, vision, values, goals. External and internal environment variables and the development of strategic planning choice and evaluation method. Relevance of strategic planning to the role and functions of the nurse manager.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have - Discussed the advantages and limitations that organisational strategic management has on nurse managers. Developed an understanding of the process of strategic planning at the organisational level through the development of a Field of Study Report. Discussed, at a beginners level, what effect the internal and external environment have on the development or revision of health care organisation's strategic plan. Identified innovations and forces for change that may impact upon the self-selected health care organisation. Evaluated observed influences on the practice domain of the nurse manager in self-selected health care agency. Developed beginning level skills in proposing recommendations which could enhance the health care organisation's ability to meet the challenges of change, based upon analysis of the organisation. Applied "strategic thinking" to practice.
