Syllabus: | Overview of the history and current activities of health organisations such as the Red Cross, Community Aid Abroad, AusAid, World Health Organisation and Medecins Sans Frontieres. Issues in disasters including natural history of disasters, strategies in disaster management and disaster epidemiology. Climate change and human health, the health impact of globalisation, the effects of militarism, sustainable development, conflicts between globalising industry and environmental protection, gender developmentperspectives and interventions. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this Unit students will have- Critically reviewed the activities of selected international health organisations and programs. Using selected case studies, demonstrated an understanding of the impact of disasters on health and development. Using selected case studies, provided a critical analysis of the strategies for disaster management. Critically reviewed current tensions and debates between globalising industry and environmental health effects. Examined the complexities associated with the outcome of climate change on human health. |
