Atomic Structure. Interatomic Bonding. Structure of Crystalline Solids. Imperfections in Solids. Diffusion. Mechanical Properties of Metals. Dislocations and Strengthening Mechanisms. Failure. Phase Diagrams. Phase Transformations in Metals. Thermal Processing of Metal Alloys. Metal Alloys. Structure and Properties of Ceramics. Applications and Processing of Ceramics. Polymer Structures. Characteristics, Applications and Processing of Polymers. Composites. Concretes. Corrosion and Degradation of Materials. Electrical Properties. Thermal Properties. Magnetic Properties. Optical Properties. Material Selection and Design Considerations. Economic, Safety and Environmental Issues.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Presented the basic fundamentals of materials science on a level appropriate for university students who have a basic understanding of 1st year calculus, chemistry, and physics courses. Presentedthe subject matter in a logical order, from the simple to the more complex. Been treated in sufficient detail and to the extent that students have the opportunity to fully understand without having to consult other sources, and, in most cases, to includesome practical relevance. Included features that will expedite the learning process.
