Area:

Department of Applied Chemistry

Credits:

12.5

Contact Hours:

2.0

Lecture:

2 x 1 Hours Weekly

Other Requisite(s):

Admission: TEE Chemistry or Chemistry 071

Syllabus:

Atomic structure and bonding. Chemical and ionic equilibria, water, silicates, corrosion, case studies of metallic corrosion, corrosion protection, organic chemistry, polymers, adhesion, surface coatings, elastomers, surface active agents, lubricants, fuel and energy.

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to recognise the language of chemistry and identify whether or not a problem situation requires a chemical solution. They will have developed an appreciation of the principles of chemistry which are so much part of our everyday lives and an understanding the relevance of chemistry in important industrial applications such as corrosion, concrete, water treatment, and mineral processing. They will gain knowledge of the impact that industrial andcommercial processes have on the quality of the environment and means to minimise pollution, and other environmental hazards and they will be able to employ practical expertise in chemistry to undertake reliable and robust experiments that may be used inpractical problem solving situations within the engineering and related professions.
