Syllabus: | Connections between optics and electromagnetism. Optical properties of materials. Normal and anomalous dispersion. Fresnel's equations. Boundary conditions. Total internal reflection, evanescent wave. Wavefront and amplitude splitting interferometry. Michelson and Fabry-Perot instrumentation. Applications. Diffraction and aperture optics, Fourier transforms, Fourier optics, Fourier spectroscopy. Coherence, fringe visibility, stimulated emission, population inversion, optical pumping, cavity oscillators, intracavity elements, Q-switching, laser systems - solid state, dye, diode, diode pumped, gas, excimer. Jones vector and matrices, Stokes vectors, Mueller matrices, polarising systems. Optical modulators, Kerr and Pockels cells, Faraday rotation, Kerr cell. Fibre optics, optical sources and detectors, holography. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will have gained an understanding of the origin of optical properties of materials, gained an in depth understanding of a range of optical phenomena, an appreciation of the information content in optical systems, and developed skills in the quantitative analysis of optical systems. |
