Syllabus:

Relationship between mAs and density. kV and mAs rules. Film and intensifying screens. Scatter and grids. Geometrical factors effecting radiographic image. Radiographic positioning and terminology for the extremities. Introduction to x-rays, medical images and their production. Factors effecting x-ray absorption. Exposure factors effecting the image. Optical density, contrast, fog. Magnification, unsharpness, resolution. Recording the image: films and screens. Latent image. Manual and automatic processing. The chemistry of developing and fixing. Quality assurance. Scatter radiation and methods for limiting its effects. Sensitometry, speed, latitude and characteristic curves. Experimental construction of characteristic curves. Image quality. Copying radiographs, subtraction.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit the student will familiarity with imaging principles in medical imaging, x-ray absorption in materials (eg. body tissues), exposure factors for imaging, characteristics of a diagnostic radiograph, various film and screen systems, radiographic processing and quality assurance and characteristics of radiographic film/screen combination.

Attend 5 (IP) Labs but submit only 4 Lab reports 15%. Attend all (MI) Labs and submit a completed Workbook 10%. One On-Course Test (IP component) 10%. Practical Examination (MI component) 40%. Final Examination (IP component) 25%.
