Syllabus:

Exploration of the collection of specific clinical specimens for microbiological examination - Principles and practices used in the isolation, identification and separation of normal human microbial flora and pathogens in clinical specimens. Processing of clinical microbiological specimens as performed in medical microbiological laboratories. Use of antimicrobials and susceptibility testing in the clinical setting.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have - performed clinical microbiological examination of human body specimens with a clear understanding of strict adherence to the rules of laboratory safety. Differentiated between antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents used in the treatment of human disease. Demonstrated a basic knowledge of the mode of action and spectrum of application of the various groups of antimicrobial actions. Demonstrated and discussed the correct collection and transportation of specimens for analysis in the clinical microbiology laboratory. Processed a variety of specimens in the clinical microbiology laboratory. Demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the normal flora and possible pathogens contained in clinical microbiology specimens from various human body sites. Evaluated the findings from examination of clinical microbiology specimens.
