Syllabus:

DNA structure and function - replication, recombination, repair, mutagenesis, transcription and translation. Prokaryotes and eukaryotes - genome organisation, gene regulation and expression. Molecular basis of disease.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to - Demonstrate an understanding of the structure, organisation, maintenance and transmission of genetic information in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Develop an insight into the mechanisms of regulating the expression of genetic information. Demonstrate an understanding of how the genetic information is decoded and translated into the amino acid sequence of proteins. Develop an insight into how molecular biology is revolutionising our understanding and treatment of genetic and infectious diseases.
