Syllabus:

Ecological systems and their protection. Air, water and land resources. Local and global systems. Legislation. Air pollutants. Impact of fossil fuel utilisation. Incineration and flare stacks. CFCs. Greenhouse gases. Global warming. Automobile fuels, emissions, tyre recycling. Ground water systems. Hydraulic systems. Ocean resources and preservation. Wastewater cleanup. Sludge processing and disposal. Discharge and treatment of heavy metals. Land resources, forest management. Domestic waste management.Remediation of contaminated soils. Transformation of pollutants. Treatment of biological wastes. Decommissioning of weapons. Global effects. Problems in developing countries. Future needs. Principles of replace, recycle, reuse. Product life-cycle considerations. Re-engineering for cleaner production.
 

Unit Outcomes:

Environmental systems, problems and solutions in a broad overview. To understand how and why environmental problems (and the release of pollutants) can occur, and their short and long-term effects. Preliminary considerations of ways in which problems and clean-up can be tackled, or preferably minimized or avoided.
