Syllabus:

Overview of international health, patterns of disease and health in developed and developing countries, resurgent and emergent diseases, health impact of globalisation, climate change and militarism. Background and context of primary health care, healthprogram policy, health and development, the socio-cultural context of health and illness, the economics of health care, health and community development, community participation. Common major health problems - diarrhoea, acute respiratory infections, malnutrition, malaria, tuberculosis, the HIV/AIDS epidemic, family planning and reproductive health.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have- Acquired an understanding of the scope and need for international health. Gained knowledge of the major patterns of, and differences in, morbidity and mortality in developed and developing countries. Developed an awareness of the particular health problems of deprived and isolated communities in both developing and developed countries. Described resurgent and emergent diseases in the global context. An understanding of the characteristics, historyand scope of primary health care with particular relevance to program policy, planning and evaluation in the control of major diseases in both developing and developed countries. Appreciated the relevance of social science, epidemiological and biomedicalapproached to primary health care.
