Syllabus: | Basic principles involved in structuring information objects and creating the metadata which makes them retrievable. Topics will include information structures, hypertext, databases, automatic and derived indexing, metadata and description, DTDs and schemas, indexing languages, standards and subject analysis, evaluation of retrieval effectiveness. |

Unit Outcomes: | On completion of this unit students will be able to - Define and describe the major types of information design and retrieval. Assess the suitability and effectiveness of retrieval methods for various types of information systems. Access current information from organisations most involved in information retrieval research and standards setting. Evaluate the effectiveness of computer-mediated indexing. |
