Syllabus:

After a campus based two week orientation, a field placement of five days per week for 14 weeks (70 days) in a social work agency under the supervision of an approved field instructor. Students are expected to relate social work theory to practice situations, and to develop a variety of social work competencies, primarily relating to direct service with individuals, families and small groups.
 

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion on of unit, students will have- Articulated an understanding of purpose and role of the placement organisation and its relationship to the broader social, economic and political context: and critically analysed the organisation'srole from a number of perspectives. Identified the appropriate function and role of the social worker within the placement organisation and utilised this understanding in participating in social work service provision. Identified and applied social work theories and theoretical perspectives from social theories generally in practice situations. Developed and implemented a plan of social work intervention. Demonstrated at a beginning level core social work skills with particular reference to working with individuals, families and small groups, including interpersonal/communication skills, advocacy and negotiation skills, assessment referral, termination and evaluation skills, planning and administration skills, writing and recording skills and teamwork skills. Located and utilised community resources relevant to client support systems and needs.
