Syllabus: | Overview of plant propagation. Propagation structures and materials. Propagation by seed - origin, sources, processing and storage of seeds, germination process and practical considerations in seed sowing. Seed dormancy mechanisms and techniques for overcoming seed dormancy. Germination times of miscellaneous native species. Propagation from cuttings - general principles and techniques, anatomical and physiological aspects. Layering techniques. Propagation by separation and division of vegetative propagules. Plant tissue culture - facilities and equipment, practical considerations, general principles of micro-propagation, systematic culture medium. Plant tissue culture, embryo culture, another culture in vitro cell selection, somaclonal variation, transformation. Grafting - general principles and techniques, cellular and physiological aspects. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will have developed an understanding of the scientific principles and practices of conventional and in vitro plant propagation. |
