Syllabus: | Radiology of the spine. Degenerative conditions of the vertebral column with particular reference to the vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs. Intervertebral disc injury and repair. Degenerative and isthmic spondylolisthesis with particular reference to lumbar spine instability. Rheumatology of the spine including medical and surgical interventions. Classification and diagnostic features of headache. Pathophysiology and pathomechanics of spinal osteoporosis. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will have outlined the principles of plain film radiography of the spine, the indications for requesting radiographs and the clinical significance of common radiological abnormalities. Described the biomechanics, pathophysiology, radiology and clinical features related to the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. Identified the differences between cervicogenic and other categories of headaches and discussed the proposed mechanisms for cervicogenic headache. Described degenerative diseases and pathologies affecting cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. Demonstrated an understanding of the aetiology and clinical presentation of rheumatological conditions affecting the spine. Discussed the pathophysiology of osteoporosis including the concepts of peak bone mass and skeletal remodelling. |
