Syllabus: | The cultural landscape of urban and rural Australia: its aesthetic and economic characteristics and social technological and environmental context. The landscapes of traditional and contemporary Aboriginal Australia. The Australian townscape: growth phases, variations by region, scale and function, the city and suburb, industrial landscapes. Australian landscapes in art. Attitudes to the preservation and destruction of landscapes. The development of a heritage and conservation movement and its impact on modern Australia. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Gained an understanding of the range of Australia's physical environments, with some reference to their uniqueness and fragility. An understanding of the importance of environmental perception indecision-making and its modification as the result of experience. An understanding of Aboriginal occupation and modification of the Australian landscape, and of heritage issues related to indigenous sites. An understanding of the relationships between landscapes, painting styles, painters and paintings, in the context of the Australian environment. An understanding of the rural and urban land use systems and their consequences for the Australian environment. An understanding of the history of environmental movement and its impact on current legislation. An understanding of the current debates on 'natural heritage', 'wilderness' and 'indigenous heritage'. Undertaken a practical exercise in evaluating a natural heritage site. |
