Syllabus: | This is the foundation unit for the Cultural Heritage major. It introduces a variety of approaches to, and discussions about, the heritage field, and is interested in analysing the political and cultural aspects of the heritage industry. Examination of arange of different representations, including that of indigenous past, in magazine, advertisements, newspapers, museums and historical sites. It provides a language and range of concepts with which to analyse this important area of cultural practice. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will have- Been introduced to a broad range of literature on heritage issues. Been encouraged to debate on ideological nature of heritage representations. Been introduced to debates about the uses of heritage. Outlined the difficulties of defining heritage. Been introduced to some of the language of analysis. Developed the ability to critically assess what they read and see, as well as their writing skills. |
