Syllabus: | Introduction to applied mathematics in a geological framework. Theory and case studies on sampling procedures, probability and randomness, frequency distributions, logarithmic class intervals, central tendency, normal distributions, confidence limits, correlation and regression analysis. Computer packages with in-built data processing routines, for example - Minitab, Excel. Case studies to be drawn from examples in geology, geochemistry, geophysics and ore reserve estimation. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the content of the syllabus sufficient to complete all practical work and assignments to the satisfaction of the unit coordinator and to achieve a pass mark in anytheory examination based on the subject matter. |
